How Payoneer Slashed BigQuery Costs by 23%?

Background

Payoneer provides online payment solutions that help businesses and professionals worldwide handle cross-border transactions. As they grew, Payoneer chose Google Cloud Platform’s BigQuery as their main data warehouse solution to manage increasing volumes of financial data. Facing rising cloud costs, Payoneer partnered with TeraSky, their Managed Service Provider (MSP) and leading Google Cloud Partner, to analyze and optimize their growing BigQuery expenses.

Challenge

Payoneer saw its BigQuery costs as a significant part of its total Google Cloud spend, increasing monthly. BigQuery’s complex pricing made it hard for Payoneer to predict costs and commit to long-term agreements that could save money. This uncertainty made them hesitant to make commitment-based purchases despite potential savings. To move forward confidently, they needed help making sense of their BigQuery usage patterns and what cost reduction opportunities would be most appropriate.

Solution

TeraSky performed a detailed cost analysis of Payoneer’s BigQuery usage. Their approach included:

  1. Detailed analysis of how Payoneer used BigQuery
  2. Development of customized cost models based on past usage and expected growth
  3. Comparison of on-demand versus commitment-based pricing options
  4. Working with Google Cloud Platform teams to confirm findings and recommendations

“The challenge wasn’t simply running numbers through a calculator,” explains Ran Ravid, FinOps and Customer Success Manager at TeraSky. “We needed to understand Payoneer’s unique usage patterns deeply, align our analysis with GCP’s commitment options, and present the data in a way that would give their finance team the confidence to commit. Our FinOps expertise and close collaboration with GCP allowed us to turn complex usage data into clear financial recommendations.”

Bottom Line

TeraSky’s analysis gave Payoneer the confidence to purchase their first BigQuery commitment in February, reducing their monthly BigQuery spend by around 23% and cutting overall Google Cloud costs by approximately 10%.
“TeraSky’s detailed analysis provided certainty to our decision-making process,” says Roee Makdashi, FinOps at Payoneer. “Their careful examination of our BigQuery usage and close work with our team and Google gave us the clarity to move forward with the commitment. The monthly savings prove this was the right decision for our business.”
This project shows how combining technical expertise, data analysis, and vendor collaboration can turn cloud cost management into a business advantage. With this foundation, Payoneer can now make similar data-driven decisions across its cloud infrastructure to maintain performance while controlling costs.
