How TeraSky Helped a Global Bank Cut Manual Workloads by 80% via VCF

Financial companies need efficient IT systems to stay competitive. Leveraging the power of VMware by Broadcom, coupled with expert implementation, enables enterprises to optimize their operations. A major global bank’s experience demonstrates this: by working with TeraSky to implement a sophisticated workload-balancing solution, they slashed manual effort by 80%, improving system performance and strengthening resilience.

Client Background & Challenge

One of the world’s largest financial institutions runs a complex and large-scale virtualized infrastructure across multiple global data centres. This large environment needs optimal resource use and high efficiency to support critical financial services.
Managing multiple vSphere data centres created several challenges for the bank’s IT teams:

  • Manual resource allocation wasted valuable IT time and created bottlenecks
  • Poor VM placement across clusters led to performance problems
  • Lack of dynamic workload balancing weakened infrastructure stability
  • Maintenance requiring cluster evacuations slowed service delivery

The organization had already used automation tools but needed a smarter, policy-driven workload-balancing solution that would integrate seamlessly with its existing VMware Cloud Foundation environment.

TeraSky’s Innovative VMware-Based Solution

TeraSky, as a global integration leader and VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) expert, designed and implemented an automated VM workload-balancing solution leveraging VCF 9’s Primary Pillars, transforming the bank’s infrastructure management capabilities.

The solution architecture combined three powerful VMware components that work together in a seamless feedback loop, where performance data drives automated actions, which then improve performance:

  • VCF Operations (formerly VMware Aria Operations / vROps) acts as the brain, constantly analyzing performance metrics and identifying optimization opportunities. It provides real-time insights into cluster health and resource usage that guide decision-making.
  • VCF Operations Orchestrator (formerly VMware Aria Automation Orchestrator / vRO) serves as the executor, turning VCF Operations recommendations into automated workflows that move VMs based on defined policies. This eliminates manual work while ensuring compliance.
  • VMware vSphere functions as the foundation, enabling VM movement across clusters with intelligent resource placement. It provides the infrastructure that VCF Operations monitors and VCF Operations Orchestrator controls.

Key Capabilities of the Solution

Near Real-Time Monitoring and Analysis
The system monitors VM workloads in near real time using VCF Operations and vSphere metrics, establishing performance baselines and automatically identifying optimization opportunities.

Intelligent Reporting

Using collected performance data, the system generates two important reports:

  • Migration recommendations based on CPU, memory, and storage thresholds
  • Resource gap reports that identify potential issues before migrations begin

Automated Workload Distribution

TeraSky implemented automated VM migrations using VCF Operations Orchestrator workflows to evenly distribute workloads across data centers. This automation follows advanced balancing rules that take into account both current and predicted resource usage.

Policy-Based Management

The solution enables cluster evacuation based on predefined policies, ensuring smooth maintenance and decommissioning without disrupting services. These policies incorporate business priorities and technical requirements to ensure proper workload placement.
The implementation also improves availability and resilience by using anti-affinity rules and vSphere DRS policies, preventing concentration risks and enhancing overall system stability.

Business Impact & Post-Implementation Benefits

Following implementation, the financial institution saw major improvements in efficiency and agility. The new system delivered an impressive 80% reduction in manual workload balancing efforts, freeing IT teams to focus on strategic projects rather than routine maintenance.
Infrastructure stability improved as critical workloads were placed optimally across data centers based on real usage patterns. Through VCF Operations Orchestrator, the bank could proactively manage performance, identifying and resolving potential bottlenecks before they affected financial services.
The solution also enabled seamless cluster evacuations, allowing maintenance activities with minimal disruption to the bank’s global operations.

What Made This Project Unique?

Fully VMware-Native Solution

Unlike third-party workload balancing tools, TeraSky delivered a pure VMware Cloud Foundation automation framework, ensuring seamless integration, security compliance, and reduced complexity.

Predictive & Proactive Optimization

By leveraging VCF Operations’ advanced analytics, the solution proactively optimizes workloads before issues arise, rather than simply reacting to problems.

Fits with Modern Development Practices

The automation aligned with the client’s GitOps and Terraform-driven approach, allowing declarative workload management at scale through VMware-native tooling.

Results That Matter

TeraSky’s deep expertise in VMware Cloud Foundation and automation enabled this leading financial institution to achieve intelligent workload balancing, operational efficiency, and proactive performance management. This project demonstrates how modern VMware Cloud Foundation solutions help financial organizations modernize their infrastructure while delivering real, measurable improvements to day-to-day operations.
