We’ve been using the term “multi-cloud” more and more recently, but what exactly is it? In short, multi-cloud is the next iteration of cloud technology. It leverages two or more cloud computing platforms, which exist together in one architecture simultaneously, to execute a variety of tasks. In doing so, it allows organizations to use more than one resource from different providers to profit from the unique benefits that each service offers. For example, it may be that one system is better at data storage, another is great for disaster recovery, and a third is excellent at development and testing. As moving to the cloud, or starting off as cloud-native has become commonplace, companies are quickly catching on to multi-cloud strategies as well. According to Hashicorp’s 2022 State of the Cloud Survey, “76% of organizations worldwide use a multi-cloud—at least one shared and one private cloud—operating model. Large enterprises were the most likely to use multi-cloud, while only 60% of small businesses and 76% of mid-sized organizations had multi-cloud infrastructure.”
