TeraSky: Future-proofing an Educational Organization

TeraSky helps customer transition to offering virtual learning and rolls out development environment for modern apps

With offices in Israel, Europe, and the United States, VMware Principal Partner TeraSky is a global system integrator focused on helping customers develop cloud-native applications, adopt multi-cloud environments, and successfully travel their digital transformation journey. The partner does this by working closely with its customers’ developers, DevOps teams, and IT groups to uncover and address immediate business needs and long-term goals.

For the third year in a row, TeraSky has won a VMware Partner Achievement Award—this year, it won the 2022 Partner Social Impact Award for the EMEA region. This award honors partners for making a positive impact on the world through the use of VMware technologies. TeraSky won the award for its work with a major educational institution.

Replicating success with new technologies globally

Ofir Abekasis is TeraSky’s CEO. He’s seen many customers struggle to quickly and successfully adopt new technologies to move to the cloud, modernize their applications, and shift to remote work environments. “We see many challenges around running workloads and multi-cloud environments and replatforming applications for customers,” he says. “Each of these efforts can keep a company from achieving its goals.”

Fortunately, TeraSky is well-positioned to support customers in adopting these technologies and using them to optimize their business. Abekasis says, “We have many tech company customers adopting technologies very quickly. This gives us the chance to learn how to constantly drive successful technology implementations.”

TeraSky has been able to use the expertise learned with forward-thinking tech companies to serve customers in Europe and the United States. “We differentiate ourselves because we come to customer engagements with real-life experience,” he explains. “We know how to provide solutions that meet our customers’ challenges.”

Abekasis adds: “The VMware portfolio helps us perfectly address customer challenges.” For example, with VMware Tanzu, TeraSky can help customers focus on developing apps rather than operating the underlying development platform. And VMware’s multi-cloud strategy lets TeraSky set up its customers to run their VMware infrastructure on any hyperscaler in the market. Finally, VMware Horizon and Workspace ONE enable TeraSky to create digital workspaces so customers can work remotely on any device from anywhere.

Using VMware solutions, TeraSky helped a key educational institution overcome its challenges around continuing to offer learning services at the pandemic onset.

Delivering critical services

The institution had traditionally provided in-person learning, and the digital services that it offered ran on an aging, monolithic applications-based platform built on bare metal servers. When the pandemic hit, almost immediately its students needed go from learning in classrooms to learning at home.

While the customer needed TeraSky to help it quickly shift to a virtual learning environment, its IT engineering team also required that the resulting environment be highly available and based on the most advanced technologies. TeraSky realized that to make this happen quickly, the solution had to be built on familiar technology that engineers could use immediately. VMware was the clear choice.

TeraSky and the customer determined the need to break monolithic applications into microservices and run them on VMware infrastructure using VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid in the public cloud. Abekasis says, “It was a huge success that in just a couple of months they were able to deliver excellent e-learning services to students.” In addition, developers can now deploy development environments at the click of a button.

Continuing the digital transformation journey

But the customer’s digital transformation journey didn’t stop there. TeraSky is now helping the customer expand its solution to more courses, providing the institution with more operational tools and services as it expands its use of the Tanzu portfolio.

TeraSky outlined the growth for the customer every step of the way. “We had many discussions with the security organization so they knew VMware solutions could protect their environment over the long term,” says Abekasis. “We also had many discussions with the application developers and the CTO to make sure that we leverage the most advanced technologies to support modernization and reusability.”

Today, the expanded solution provides the experience and ecosystem that developers need to develop modern apps. In addition, the CTO can now commit to developers adding new application features faster on more accurate timelines. Abekasis also notes, “TeraSky is working with the institution’s IT, engineering, and the CTO, helping them choose the right cloud platforms and make the right decisions about where to run their applications.”

Serving the role of trusted advisor

According to Abekasis, customers choose to work with TeraSky because the firm is committed to its customers. “We want to become their trusted advisor. Everything we do we execute masterfully, so we focus on developing the right expertise and knowledge,” he says.

Part of this mastery comes from TeraSky’s investment in earning VMware Master Services Competencies (MSCs). MSCs demonstrate that a partner has deep expertise and knowledge of VMware technologies along with customer-validated experience. TeraSky has earned all available MSCs available, including:

  • Cloud and Automation
  • Cloud-Native Applications (EMEA & Americas)
  • Data Center Virtualization
  • Digital Workspace
  • Network and Security
  • VMware on AWS
  • MSC Cloud Foundation

Abekasis sees TeraSky’s investment in VMware paying off for both TeraSky and its customers. He explains, “VMware solutions are connected to each other and provide customers end-to-end solutions—at the end of the day, this is what C-level and other decision makers at our customers want.”

Abekasis concludes, “We want to provide our customers with the best technology platform so they can focus on their business. Working with VMware has been instrumental in helping us do exactly that.”
